The laboratory in Bolesławiec is ready to diagnose coronavirus

A molecular laboratory has been launched in the Health Care Complex in Bolesławiec, which allows the examination and detection of cases of coronavirus infection in just a few hours. Tests and new diagnostic equipment can also be used to detect other infectious diseases, such as HIV or viral hepatitis.

In order for PCR testing to be possible in the Bolesławiec hospital, it was necessary to purchase the necessary equipment, reagents, consumables, as well as adapt the laboratory and train the staff in the field of performing molecular diagnostic tests. The laboratory consists of rooms with specialized machines: thermal cyclers, laminar chambers, separators, analyzers and other auxiliary equipment intended entirely for the so-called PCR for coronavirus.

The hospital was transformed into a single-name infectious disease hospital, which greatly facilitated the work, and at the same time shortened the waiting time for tests, which until now were sent to Wrocław, and the waiting time for the results was about 3 days. The laboratory’s daily capacity is up to 300 tests a day. These tests clearly confirm or exclude COVID-19 infection. The current demand of the hospital is about 200 examinations a day.

The investment included the adaptation of rooms and the delivery of 5,000 reagents and tests. The cost of the entire investment – PLN 1,400,000 – will be covered by the European Union through the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship as well as subsidies from local governments and the hospital’s own funds.

Genetic and immunological (serological) tests are used to detect the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease. The laboratory of the Health Care Team in Bolesławiec has been entered on the list of COVID laboratories https://www.gov.pl/web/zdrowie/lista-laboratoriow-covid . On the list in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, the laboratory is only in Wrocław and Legnica.

Launching the PCR laboratory will significantly increase the efficiency and speed of the results, which made it possible to create DRIVE THRU – the sample is taken from people in the car.
